What Is An Essay Format

The best way to approach an essay is to visualize it as a five part project. An essay constitutes the following parts:

• Introduction
• Point One
• Point Two
• Point Three
• Conclusion

Depending upon how long your paper is you may have more than three main points. However by using this structure it will make envisioning your paper easier.

The Introduction:

The introduction of an essay should reply the following questions:

• 1. What am I going to illustrate in this paper?
  
  

  By answering this question you let the readers acknowledge about the subject you are going to elaborate on. For instance, if you paper were about a specific personality, your answer to his question would give the name, identity and other specific information about that person

• 2. How am I going to talk about it?
  
  

  Here you let the reader know the organization of your essay paper. It is done by the brief introduction of your main points or the evidence that will prove your point.

• 3. What am I going to prove in this essay paper?
  
  

  This is called the THESIS STATEMENT. The thesis is typically the last sentence in the first paragraph and it clearly states the point or argument you are making in your essay paper.

The Body:

The body includes everything between your introduction and conclusion. In the body you discuss your major points or ideas taking each point or idea as a separate paragraph.

The best way to approach your each paragraph is to:

• Introduce your specific point
• Explain your point
• Give supportive evidence (this is where quotes go!)
• Explain the relation of points and evidence to your thesis statement.

The Conclusion:

The conclusion is basically the restatement of introduction in the form of evidence supported by your ideas mentioned in body paragraphs. It helps reader to trace your arguments that you made within the essay. The good way to approach the conclusion to create a proof that might look like this:

Idea 1 + Idea 2 + Idea 3 = Thesis
(or)
IDEA 1 leads to IDEA 2 which leads to IDEA 3 there for THESIS is true!
