How to write a TOK essay?

TOK essays are prescribed by IB (The International Baccalaureate) every year for students in which students are being asked to choose an essay title from the list of ten essay titles. Students should actively take part in discussions in their theory of knowledge course and share their views on knowledge with colleagues to build confidence. Participating in discussions will definitely help students in writing a TOK essay.

Here are some steps that students need to follow for writing a theory of knowledge essay:

Step 1

Understand the Importance of TOK essay question: First of all, you need to understand the significance of your essay title. Your essay title will be addressing to a particular issue; therefore, you should concentrate hard on the title to develop ideas for your essay.

Step 2

Review the Grading Criteria & Plan your Essay: You should have a look at the grading criteria and plan your essay by discussing it with colleagues to come up with an outline and reasons in support of your essay title.  

Step 3

Proper Structuring: As TOK essays give you the permission to utilize only 1600 words for your essay; therefore, you should cover appropriate topics in your TOK essay with a proper outline. Each paragraph of your essay should be related to another if you want proper structuring of your essay.     

Step 4

Proofread: Once you are done with your TOK essay; you should go for the proofread. You should look for the loopholes in your essay and correct any grammatical and structural error if you see any in your theory of knowledge essay.

Step 5

Finalizing your Essay: In finalization of your essay, you should keep in mind whether you are being asked to submit your essay in a particular format or not. If you are being asked to submit your essay in a particular format; then, you should incorporate the format required for your essay; otherwise, you can adopt any format. You should also remember that it is better to keep the font size of your essay to be 12 if you want to meet up with standards of essay writing.
